Disabled parking placard renewals now available online in California

DMV urges disabled placard holders to renew online by deadline

    – Californians with permanent disabled person parking placards who need to provide a signature for renewal can now complete the process online. The Department of Motor Vehicles (DMV) announced that customers can submit an electronic signature at dmv.ca.gov/dpp instead of visiting a DMV office.

Renewal notices are being sent to approximately 260,000 customers who have held a parking placard for six years or more and are required to verify their continued need for the placard.

“We have made it easy for customers to renew their placards online,” said DMV Director Steve Gordon. “During our last renewal cycle, nearly one million customers renewed using our new online service. We hope customers will continue to take advantage of this convenient renewal option this time around.”

Placard holders can scan the QR code on their renewal notice to access the online system or visit dmv.ca.gov/dpp directly. Customers without the renewal notice can still complete the process online. Instructions for renewing are available in a guide on the DMV website. Alternatively, placard holders can sign and mail their paper renewal notice to the DMV with postage provided by the customer. All renewals must be completed before the current placards expire on June 30, 2025.

A 2017 law requires permanent disabled parking placard holders to submit a signed renewal notice to the DMV every six years. Previously, placards were automatically renewed every two years without requiring a signature.

Digital services encouraged for DMV tasks

The DMV has expanded its digital services to reduce the need for office visits. Most transactions, including driver’s license and vehicle registration renewals, can now be completed online. Customers can also use the Service Advisor tool on the DMV website to explore their options for completing DMV-related tasks.

To receive paperless renewal notices for vehicle registration and driver’s licenses, customers can create a secure online account and register at dmv.ca.gov.
