Downtown SLO Farmers’ Market hosts event for National Farmers’ Week

Event is free, family-friendly, and open to the public

    – The Downtown SLO Thursday Night Farmers’ Market will commemorate National Farmers’ Market Week with a special event on Thursday, Aug. 8, from 6–8 p.m. at the intersection of Chorro and Higuera Streets.

The community is invited to celebrate the 40-plus farm stands that populate Higuera Street every week. Activities will include an interactive art activity, a chance to win a basket of goods from market vendors, a dive into the market’s history, information on food access programs with the San Luis Obispo County Department of Social Services, engagement with the SLO Food Bank’s GleanSLO Produce Rescue Program, and live music from singer-songwriter Launnie Ginn.

The event is free, family-friendly, and open to the public. Attendees are advised to leave pets at home. National Farmers’ Market Week, from Aug. 4–10, highlights the vital role of farmers’ markets in the nation’s food system.

Downtown SLO manages a CalFresh/EBT program, providing access to fresh food for low-income individuals. The Market Match grant doubles customers’ buying power when they use CalFresh/EBT benefits. As the only night market in San Luis Obispo County, the Downtown SLO Farmers’ Market is a resource for working families and students to shop for fresh produce. In the most recent fiscal year, over $59,000 was distributed in EBT benefits at the market.

For those interested in learning about EBT/CalFresh benefits at the Downtown SLO Farmers’ Market, information is available at the orange Info Booth tent every Thursday at the intersection of Chorro and Higuera Streets.

The National Farmers’ Market Week Celebration coincides with the regular Downtown SLO Farmers’ Market, which runs from 6–9 p.m. every Thursday evening on Higuera Street. Visitors can enjoy five blocks of vendors offering fresh produce, BBQ, meals, crafts, baked goods, entertainment, and more.

The Downtown SLO Farmers’ Market is made possible through a partnership with the City of San Luis Obispo, sponsorship from Dignity Health and Cal Poly, and media sponsorship from American General Media.

Downtown SLO, founded in 1975, is a 501(c)(6) nonprofit with a mission to foster an economically vibrant downtown. The organization works on initiatives like parking and beautification, coordinates special events and the weekly Farmers’ Market, supports economic activities, and examines downtown issues.
