Update: Driver killed in Highway 41 crash identified

– The California Highway Patrol has identified the driver killed Wednesday morning in a crash on Highway 41 as 58-year-old Gemma Salting of Atascadero.
The crash occurred at about 7 a.m. on Highway 41 between Morro Bay and Atascadero, just north of Toro Creek Road in San Luis Obispo County.
Phill Peterson was driving a 2024 Dodge Ram 3500 and towing a trailer northbound when a large piece of equipment became dislodged from the trailer, according to reports.
The equipment fell into the southbound lane and struck Salting’s vehicle. Salting traveled off the road in her vehicle, went down an embankment, and struck a tree.
Emergency personnel pronounced Salting dead at the scene. The Highway Patrol does not suspect drugs or alcohol contributed to the crash.

Driver killed in Highway 41 crash near Atascadero
– A driver died Wednesday morning after traveling off Highway 41 in a truck, going down an embankment, and striking a tree near Toro Creek Road.
The crash occurred around 7 a.m. between Atascadero and Morro Bay. The truck came to rest about 20 feet off the road, down an embankment.
Emergency responders worked to extricate the driver from the truck at about 7:32 a.m., according to reports.
The crash closed Highway 41 in both directions. Authorities closed the highway at Los Altos Road in Atascadero and at Bear Ridge Road toward Morro Bay.
Highway 41 reopened at about 11:25 a.m.
