Last Wednesday, the Templeton High School (THS) February 2015 Athletes of the Month were recognized at a special lunch co-sponsored by the THS Eagles Athletic Boosters and Chulo’s Café & Cantina. The February 2015 THS Athletes of the Month in alphabetical order are: Nick Herring, Amanda Rietkerk, Nick Wilcox, and Aubrey Willardson.

The award winning athletes were nominated for athletic excellence combined with those traits that foster excellence. Some of those qualities may include leadership, work ethic, attitude, and citizenship, coupled with how well the nominee juggles athletics with various other responsibilities and interests in their lives – including academics, extracurricular activities, work, and community service.

Senior Nick Herring was nominated by Varsity Boys Basketball Head Coach Larry McCoy. “Nick Herring is a pleasure to have on the team,” said McCoy. “He is very analytical and is always ahead in his thinking but couples it with a good work ethic which makes him an asset to the team. He is well liked by all and his favorite number is 17.”

Senior Amanda Rietkerk was nominated by Varsity Girls Basketball Head Coach David Wood. “Amanda is the hardest working player on the team,” said Wood. “She continued to come in first in sprints and effort drills and gives new meaning to leading by example. She is a tough-minded defensive player that plays with a lot of hustle and determination.”

Senior Nick Wilcox was nominated by Varsity Boys Soccer Head Coach Richard Sullenger. “Nick is a 3 year varsity soccer starter and is very dedicated to the team,” said Sullenger. “He is a natural leader, and as Captain has done a fantastic job managing his team – he knows what I’m thinking before I say anything – great quality.”

“He also plays a hard position in central defensive,” continued Sullenger. “He played a huge role in our run to CIF playoffs. We are going to really miss Nick as he is irreplaceable. He is the consummate student-athlete and serves as a role model for all our younger players.”

Senior Aubrey Willardson was nominated by Varsity Girls Basketball head Coach David Wood. “Aubrey is tough!” said Wood. “She often was matched up against players that were much bigger, but what she didn’t have in size, she made up for in toughness and grit. Aubrey is a leader and a great teammate.”

The THS Athletes of the Month program is sponsored by the THS Eagles Athletic Boosters and Chulo’s Café & Cantina, nominations and athlete logistics are coordinated by THS Athletic Director Lindsay Campana, and the overall event is coordinated and published by Soaring Eagle Press and its sponsors.
