    Elks name San Miguel man district deputy

    – Louis Henry Schmitz of San Miguel was installed as District Deputy for the Benevolent and Protective Order of Elks during the organization’s national convention held in Kansas City from June 29 to July 2.

    Schmitz will represent lodges in the West Central Coast District of the California-Hawaii Elks Association. His term will last one year.

    Thousands of members and guests attended the convention. The Benevolent and Protective Order of Elks is a national organization focused on charitable and patriotic efforts. Last year, the organization donated more than $500 million in cash, goods, and services to those in need, including students, people with disabilities, members of the United States armed forces and their families, veterans and their families, and charitable organizations.

    Since its founding 157 years ago, the organization has donated approximately $12 billion to charitable causes.

    The Elks National Foundation awards nearly $4.3 million in college scholarships annually. The foundation also funds local efforts through the Community Investments Program, which will provide nearly $17.6 million to local lodges this year.

    The Elks National Veterans Service Commission supports more than 380 Department of Veterans Affairs medical centers, state veterans homes, and clinics. Volunteers offer direct services to veterans and use grants to provide food, supplies, and emergency assistance, including housing support for veterans experiencing homelessness.
