Family loses home and dog in structure fire

Cayucos fire stationA single-family home in Heritage Ranch caught on fire Sunday morning.

According to a GoFundMe.com campaign for the victims Steffany and Shawn Duncan, nothing inside the house was saved and their blue Catahoula leopard hound, Hearum, was lost in the fire. There was reportedly $70,000 in structure damage and $10,000 to contents.

Steve Crawford of CALFire said that three CALFire engines and one battalion chief responded to the fire. “[The fire] appears to be [caused] by an appliance,” he said.

The fire crews responded to the fire about 10:25 a.m. and had it under control is about 20 minutes, Crawford said. “It was a room and contents fire,” he said. “There was smoke damage, but the fire was contained to the kitchen.” No one was home when the fire started. Crawford said there were two dogs at the home, but while one got out, the other curled up in a closet and died of smoke inhalation. He said fire personnel were not aware of the second dog until it was too late.

The GoFundMe campaign has a goal of $5,000 to help the family with the replacement of household items, as well as security deposits and rent for new housing. As of Wednesday afternoon, more than $3,300 had been raised.

Crawford said there were three home nearby that could have been threatened if CALFire crews did not get the fire under control.
