‘Under the Feet of Jesus,’ by Helena Maria Viramontes is library’s Good Read for October

–Continuing with the theme of immigration and migration in California, the Paso Robles City Library Book Club’s October title is “Under the Feet of Jesus,” by Helena Maria Viramontes. Desperate to escape the despair, hopelessness, and hardship of the migrant-workers’ existence, Estrella, a young Mexican-American migrant worker, fights back against a system that will do almost anything to keep her down. Infused with the beauty of the California landscape and shifting splendors of the passing seasons juxtaposed with the bleakness of poverty, this vividly imagined novel, so observant and full of wisdom, is worthy of the people it celebrates and whose story it tells so magnificently.

The discussion begins at 7 p.m. on Thur, Oct 19 in the Library Conference Room. For more information on the library’s Book Club or other adult programs, contact Karen Christiansen at (805) 237-3870 or kchristiansen@prcity.com.
