Fine arts instructor features reimagined journals at Cuesta Library

–Visitors to the Cuesta College library during the months of March and April will be greeted by the artworks of Fine Arts Instructor Marcia Harvey. Located on the San Luis Obispo Campus in building 3200, the library’s entrance display cases and children’s reading center currently feature pieces composed of found materials and Harvey’s personal journals. Harvey has spent the last five years re-making her 28 journals into artwork, transforming the pages into small sculptural objects, drawings, and collage elements in paintings.

“I use text and writing in my work frequently,” said Harvey, who teaches printmaking at Cuesta College. “The marks that we make writing and drawing belong together, despite the possible confusion in viewing works with text. Does the viewer read it or look at it? I invite the public to come and ‘read’ my recent artwork in the library!”

Harvey earned an Associate of Arts Degree from Cuesta College, a Bachelor of Arts Degree in Fine Arts from UC Davis, and a Master’s in Fine Arts Degree from Washington State University. Harvey currently has four works on permanent display in the San Luis Obispo County Government Building. She has also painted two of the utility boxes in San Luis Obispo as part of the Utility Box Art Program. More information on Harvey is available on her website.

Cuesta College offers various degrees in fine arts, including in the disciplines of art history, studio arts, art studio, and graphics. For more information on the Cuesta College Fine Arts Department, visit its webpage.

Cuesta College’s San Luis Obispo Campus library is open Monday – Thursday, 7:30 a.m. – 8 p.m.; Friday, 7:30 a.m. – 4 p.m.; closed Saturdays, Sundays, and all academic holidays. For more information, call the library at (805) 546-3155.
