Fire breaks out in Gifford Fire burn scar
Access roads hampered firefighting response, according to report
– A vegetation fire broke out Friday in Los Padres National Forest between Pozo and Highway 166, burning approximately 100 acres in the burn scar of the Gifford Fire, according to a report by the San Luis Obispo Tribune.
The fire was reported at 11:37 a.m. in an area scorched by the Gifford Fire in August — the third largest fire in modern Central Coast history, which burned more than 130,000 acres, including 80,000 acres in San Luis Obispo County. The new fire was located near Stony Creek Road and Aqua Escondido Road.
Firefighting units had difficulty reaching the fire due to limited access roads, washed-out paths, and steep terrain. By 1 p.m., no units were yet on scene. Two air tankers and a helicopter were ordered to the area at 1:21 p.m. but were later canceled. By 2:30 p.m., all en route units, including dozers, were also canceled.
The fire was held in place by previously bulldozed firebreak lines. A dozer line was established around the perimeter, but containment remained at 0% as of 5:18 p.m. Friday, according to the report.
