Fire season begins in San Luis Obispo County, burning banned
Order applies to all state responsibility areas in San Luis Obispo County
– Cal Fire San Luis Obispo Unit has declared the start of fire season and suspended backyard burning due to increasing fire danger from warming temperatures, drying vegetation, and below-normal rainfall.
The declaration takes effect at 8 a.m. on May 4. Backyard burning of residential yard debris is prohibited on all state responsibility area lands within San Luis Obispo County.
In accordance with Public Resources Code Section 4423(b), the suspension applies to all backyard burn permits issued by the local air pollution control district and will remain in effect until the end of fire season.
Other types of burning, including agricultural, range improvement, and hazard reduction, require a valid burn permit from the state fire agency and the air district and must comply with LE-5 and LE-7 requirements. Campfires are allowed where permitted if properly maintained.
The proclamation will remain in effect until it is formally terminated.
