Fire weather watch issued for North County

Isolated to widely scattered dry thunderstorms are possible

    – A fire weather watch will be in effect from 9 a.m. Saturday through 9 p.m. Saturday for dry thunderstorms in the interior San Luis Obispo County.

The National Weather Service in Los Angeles/Oxnard issued the watch, stating that isolated to widely scattered dry thunderstorms are possible. These thunderstorms are capable of lightning-induced ignitions and will be high-based, producing little, if any, precipitation.

Outflow winds from the dry thunderstorms could be strong and erratic, with gusts locally reaching 45 to 60 mph. These conditions could lead to the rapid spread of any ongoing fires, such as the Lake Fire in Santa Barbara County, as well as new fires.

The weather service warns that conditions will be favorable for lightning-induced ignitions and rapid wildfire spread. Strong and erratic outflow winds could threaten life and property. Hot temperatures could lead to large vertical plume growth, creating extremely dangerous conditions for wildfire operations.

A fire weather watch indicates that critical fire weather conditions are likely to occur in the coming days. Residents near wildland interfaces should prepare for potential wildfires. For more information, visit readyforwildfire.org and wildfirerisk.org.
