Firecrackers set off at high school, principal sends out warning statement

Firecrackers at Paso Robles high school

Note originally distributed to parents by Anthony Overton, Paso Robles High School Principal:

–Today (Monday) during nutrition and lunch a student or group of students set off firecrackers in the quad. These devices are explosives and per Education Code 48915(c)5 any student in possession of these devices will be expelled and reported to law enforcement.

More importantly, these devices also create a noise that can be mistaken as gunfire and presents an unsafe and fearful condition on campus. Furthermore, it desensitizes students to the sound of potentially dangerous popping noises, delaying a safety flight response in an actual emergency. With the events of the past week and several years, PRHS takes these actions with the utmost seriousness. As it is the responsibility of each and every one of us to keep our campus safe, any student that has any information regarding this incident or any unsafe items on campus are asked to tell a staff, safety, or faculty member immediately. There is also a tip line available on our school website www.pasoschools.org/prhs.

Please take a moment to discuss with your students the severity of these actions and the consequences these actions can have for them, their peers, and our school community. Thank you for your time.

Sincerely,
Mr. Overton
