Former Bearcat basketball coach expands pizza and sports bar business

Bob Cantu’s Pizza and Sports Bar will feature the same menu as Marv’s Pizza and Sports Bar in Paso Robles

    – Paso Robles local and former University of Southern California basketball coach Bob Cantu is opening a second restaurant in downtown San Luis Obispo. The new location, Bob Cantu’s Pizza and Sports Bar, will feature the same menu as Marv’s Pizza and Sports Bar in Paso Robles.

The restaurant, located at 1131 Broad St., will offer indoor and outdoor seating, as well as indoor and outdoor bars serving beer and wine. The menu will include the same ingredients and offerings from Marv’s Pizza, which has been in Paso Robles since 1991.

Cantu plans to maintain the original menu while introducing an upscale sports bar atmosphere in San Luis Obispo. The location will showcase sports memorabilia, including autographed jerseys from professional basketball, football, and baseball players. Multiple televisions will be installed, allowing customers to request specific games.

Beer, wine, and seltzers will be available under the beer and wine license. Cantu will be actively involved in the restaurant’s operations.

“We want to be that late-night option for the students who are out late and want a late-night snack as well as cater to families and athletic teams,” Cantu said.

The restaurant will be open from noon to 10 p.m. on Sundays, from 4 p.m. to 10 p.m. on Mondays and Wednesdays, and from 4 p.m. to midnight on Thursdays. On Fridays and Saturdays, it will be open from noon to 1 a.m., while it will remain closed on Tuesdays.

Cantu played varsity basketball at Paso Robles High School from 1989 to 1992 before starting his coaching career at St. Rose, Mission Prep, Cuesta College, and California Polytechnic State University. He most recently spent three years as an assistant coach at the University of Portland. Prior to that, he coached at the University of Texas at El Paso for three seasons and spent 12 seasons at the University of Southern California, where he served as an assistant coach, associate head coach, and interim head coach for 15 games during the 2012-13 season.

During his collegiate coaching career, Cantu helped lead teams to five NCAA Tournaments and 10 postseason appearances. He has recruited or coached 14 NBA players, including five first-round draft picks, and has been recognized as one of the nation’s top assistant coaches. Since 1997, more than 11,000 campers have attended his basketball camps in Paso Robles and San Luis Obispo.
