– Former Bearcat Carson Turnquist struck out nine and allowed only two hits over six innings as the Cal Poly Mustangs beat Long Beach State 49ers (Dirtbags) Friday night at Cal Poly’s Baggett Stadium, 6-2.
With the win, the Mustangs remain in a first-place tie with UC Santa Barbara, although the Gauchos swept the Mustangs so they have the tiebreaker. Each team plays its final regular-season game Saturday.
Turnquist threw 105 pitches over six complete innings. He allowed only one earned run. That was a solo home run in the sixth. Carson’s record improves to 7-2 for the season.
Although Turnquist is a Poly Junior, he’s eligible for the Major League draft in June. He and catcher Ryan Tayman of Grover Beach are among several Mustangs who are expected to be drafted.
The Mustangs play their final regular season game at 1:00 Saturday afternoon at Baggett Stadium. The Big West Tournament will be held next week in Irvine. The winner of that tournament will advance to the NCAA Regionals, probably at UCLA or Oregon State, but that has not yet been determined.
Cal Poly baseball games are aired live on the Ticket, KXTK, 1280 am and 101.7 fm. They can also be viewed on ESPN+, although that requires a subscription.
