– Former Bearcat Carson Turnquist turned in his best performance as a Cal Poly Mustang on Saturday in La Jolla. The right-handed pitcher struck out eleven hitters over five innings to beat the UC San Diego Tritons. Carson allowed only three hits and no earned runs over five complete innings. For the season, Carson has struck out 49 hitters and walked 20. He’s faced 153 hitters and allowed only three home runs. His ERA dropped to 3.76. His record is 3-2 for the season.
After graduating from Paso Robles High School, Carson played one year at Oklahoma. He then transferred to Poly and had Tommy John surgery on his elbow. This season, he started several Mustang games on Sunday. After several strong outings, he’s become Saturday’s starter.
The Mustangs won two out of three against UC San Diego. They are now in a three-way tie for first place in the Big West Conference with UC San Diego and UC Santa Barbara. Each team has a record of 12-6. Cal State Fullerton is one game back at 11-7. At the end of the regular season, the Big West will conduct a conference tournament. Last year, Cal Poly won that tournament and advanced to the NCAA Regionals in Eugene, Oregon. The Mustangs eliminated the Oregon Ducks at the regional, but lost to Arizona in the final game.
Infielder Alejandro Garza of Bakersfield leads Cal Poly hitters with a .379 average. In his last eight games, Garza has hit .590. In those recent games, he’s hit seven doubles and one home run.
Tuesday, Cal Poly plays at Pepperdine. This coming weekend, Cal Poly hosts Cal State Northridge (CSUN). Turnquist is the probable starter for the Saturday game at Baggett Stadium.
Cal Poly baseball games are broadcast live on ESPN Radio 101.7 FM in the North County and 1280 AM.
