    – Former Bearcat Carson Turnquist starts for Cal Poly as the Mustangs play for survival Saturday in the “best-of-three” West Virginia Super Regional.

Friday, the WVU Mountaineers beat the Mustangs 12-2. Mustang starter Griffin Naess gave up a three-run homer in the first inning and a grand slam in the fourth. The Mustangs had nine hits, including a home run by Dylan Kordic and doubles by Ryan Tayman and Cam Hoiland. But those nine hits were scattered over nine innings, and did not come in bunches. Overall, WVU dominated on Friday. Pitcher Chansen Cole (10-1) struck out 11 Mustangs.

After Friday’s defeat, Coach Larry Lee told his players, “It doesn’t matter if you lose one nothing or lose by 10 runs, it’s a new game tomorrow.”

After the game, the West Virginia fans sang “Take Me Home, Country Roads” by John Denver to celebrate their victory.

Saturday in Morgantown, Carson Turnquist will take his turn on the mound. If the former Bearcat can stifle the WVU hitting, the Mustangs may play a decisive game Sunday. If not, the Cal Poly season may reach its conclusion on Saturday. The winner in the best-of-three series advances to the College World Series in Omaha, Nebraska.

Turnquist has won his previous seven games. He is 9-2, with an ERA of 3.35. He throws mostly fastballs, which are clocked at 96-98 miles per hour. The Mountaineers will start their ace, Maxx Yehl. Yehl is 8-2 with an ERA of 2.12.

The first pitch will be around 9 a.m., our time, on Saturday.

You can hear the game live on The Ticket, 101.7 FM and 1280 AM.
