Former Bearcat pitches well for Cal Poly
– Former Paso Robles Bearcat Carson Turnquist was the starting pitcher in Cal Poly‘s baseball game Monday evening against Washington State University at Baggett Stadium. Turnquist threw 66 pitches for the Mustangs, giving up two hits and one run. When he left the game after four innings, the score was tied 1-1. The Mustangs ultimately lost the game 5-4. They split the four-game series with WSU. The Mustangs are now 4-3 for the season.
Turnquist is one of two San Luis Obispo County baseball players who went away to play for major college teams and then returned to Cal Poly. Carson played at Oklahoma, then had Tommy John Surgery. After the surgery, he came to pitch for Cal Poly.
Mustang catcher Ryan Tayman played two years at Cal, but chose to play this year at Cal Poly. PBearcat fans may remember the Cal connection. Dylan Beavers led the Pac-10 in home runs while playing for Cal. He finished last season playing for the Baltimore Orioles.
The Mustangs are coming off one of their best baseball seasons ever. In 2025, they won the Big West Championship and traveled to Eugene, Oregon, for the NCAA Regional. The Mustangs beat host Oregon, eliminating the Ducks from the Regionals. Unfortunately, Arizona then beat the Mustangs. The Wildcats ultimately advanced to the College World Series in Omaha.
The Cal Poly Mustangs host USC for a series this weekend at Baggett Stadium. USC is 7-0 for the season. The first game will be Thursday evening at 6:05. They will play again on Friday, Saturday, and Sunday at Cal Poly. It’s likely that Carson Turnquist will start one of the weekend games against the USC Trojans
