Gloria M. Howe dies at 81

–Gloria Howe passed away on Feb. 24, 2018, at her home in Atascadero.

She was born on Oct. 16, 1937, in Chicago, Ill. She attended Chicago City schools and graduated from Lake View High School in 1955. While attending Northern Illinois University she met her future husband, Greg Howe.

Gloria’s parents, Sam and Dora Abinanti had decided to move his business to Long Beach where her older sister lived and was starting a family. Gloria came with them and started working as a secretary. After Greg completed college and time in the army, he came to California. They married in Long Beach on Apr. 30, 1960. She continued working as a school secretary for the ABC Unified School District, a job she loved. During this time, their son Gregory was born.

A move to Orange County followed and the family lived there until 1976. They had taken a vacation to Morro Bay the previous year and decided to move to San Luis Obispo County. Initially, they settled in Los Osos and lived there for seven years. After their son graduated from high school they moved to Atascadero where Greg had been working. They had a home built on a parcel of land they loved and have been there for over thirty-four years.

Gloria is survived by her husband Greg, her son Greg, daughter in law Gabriela and granddaughters Sofia and Olivia Howe. Gloria’s parents Sam and Dora Abinanti, and her sister Mary Ann Stoll preceded her in death. Gloria was a caring daughter, mother, and loving wife. She was a past recipient of the Phi Delta Kappa annual service award for school volunteerism and was a past First Lady of the Atascadero Elks Lodge.

The family would like to thankfully acknowledge Central Coast Hospice for their excellent work and assistance with our beloved Gloria. The Chapel of the Roses handled the final arrangements, and a celebration of her life was held in their chapel on Friday, Mar. 9 for family and friends.
