Goods and services sales tax to improve county roads

County Board of Supervisors to consider half-cent sales tax measure for transportation

City of Paso Robles–At Tuesday’s Paso Robles City Council meeting, the council approved a resolution requesting the San Luis Obispo County Board of Supervisors to place a measure on the Nov. 8, 2016 ballot, asking the voters if they want San Luis Obispo County to become a Self-Help County for transportation, by authorizing a half-cent sales tax on sales of goods and services throughout the county over the next nine years, for the purpose of improving roads, highways, bike trails, and transit services. The board of supervisors is scheduled to consider this measure on July 12.

City Manager Tom Frutchey said if approved by the voters, Paso Robles would receive $13.9 million over the nine years; more than half of this money would be contributed by visitors to Paso Robles.

Well-maintained streets are vital for the city’s economy and the safety of the city’s residents. Poorly maintained streets discourage visitors, impact public safety, and increase the costs of vehicle maintenance. Paso Robles is in need of additional funding for street maintenance and transportation projects, as evidenced by its low pavement condition rating, according to the report. The item was previously considered at the April 19, city council meeting.

We don't tax "Services" now, is this a new kind of tax? If so, I'll push for NO. If it is just an addition to the regular "Sales Tax" then I'll consider it.

Almost half is not for roads. Vote NO

It is time for our county to demand its fair share of our state tax dollars for transportation and road maintenance.

I don't like the 'service' part of the wording nor the 'transportation' part. Don't tax services, and raise bus fees a little. A quarter extra per ride?
