Groundbreaking ceremony to be held for Paso Robles Aquatic Complex

–The Paso Robles Joint Unified School District (PRJUSD) welcomes the community to a groundbreaking ceremony to mark the start of construction of the Paso Robles Aquatic Complex. The event will take place on Monday, April 9, beginning at 4 p.m., at Paso Robles High School, located at 801 Niblick Road in Paso Robles.

With the passage of Measure M in 2016, $5.7 million has been allocated towards the construction of the complex on the Paso Robles High School (PRHS) campus. The complex will be used year-round as a community-wide facility supporting physical education, athletic swimming, and emergency water safety programs in all schools as well as hosting health and wellness programs outside of school hours. Phase I of construction is projected to be completed by January 2019.

Measure M funds will cover the cost of items such as land excavation, pool construction, decking, lighting, diving blocks, and pool equipment. Additional funding is being sought to provide athlete changing rooms, a public restroom facility, student classroom, meeting room, and a concession stand. Sponsorship opportunities for businesses and individuals are still available and can be accessed through the website www.swimpaso.org.

The 4A Foundation for Paso Robles Schools and the We Swim Paso Committee have raised nearly $600,000 in cash and in-kind donations of materials and labor from local businesses and individuals to help reach the initial fundraising goal. Says Superintendent Chris Williams, “We are thrilled to see the vision for this world-class facility come to life thanks to the support of the Board of Trustees, the hard work of the committee, and the generosity of our community.”

PRHS is one of only two schools in the PAC 8 League that does not have an on-campus pool (the other, San Luis Obispo High School, is breaking ground on a pool this summer). PRHS aquatic athletes currently use Municipal Pool for practices but the facility is not adequate to host a varsity swim meet or water polo game. With the new complex, PRHS will be able to host not only high school meets, but CIF events and Junior Olympics as well. These meets can potentially draw thousands of people into the area generating revenue for the community and exposing North County athletes to the highest quality of competition.
