Groundwater sustainability meeting held at library conference room

–Groundwater sustainability was the subject of another in a series of meetings held Wednesday afternoon at Paso Robles Library Conference Room. More than 40 people attended the meeting to hear presenter/facilitator Derek Williams and San Luis Obispo County’s Courtney Howard describe Chapters 9 and 10 of the state-mandated draft plan for the Paso Robles groundwater basin.

During public comment, several local residents addressed the GSA committee of North County elected officials. Those elected officials include Paso Robles City Councilman John Hamon and Supervisor John Peschong.

Cody Ferguson of rural Paso Robles said, “My well has gone up 10-12 feet this winter because of all the rain.” Ferguson said that open ponds should be banned, because they allow too much water to evaporate. “Cover the ponds or use tanks. There are a lot of people who will sell you a water tank.”

Robin Chapman of San Miguel said. “The biggest pull on groundwater is caused by growers pumping water from land that had been historically dry-farmed.”

Courtney Howard of San Luis Obispo County said the full draft plan for groundwater sustainability in the Paso Robles groundwater basin will be released Aug. 14. She said, “There will be a 45 day comment period for people to address all 12 chapters. The last day for comment will be Sept. 29.”

Supervisor John Peschong, who is chairman of the committee, say the next Special Meeting will be held Aug. 14 at the Paso Robles Library Conference Room. The deadline for the submission of a plan to state officials is Jan. 31, 2020.
