Harold J. Miossi Trust awards grants to the ‘Great AGventure’ program

–Recognizing the value of educating the county’s youth about the importance of the agriculture industry, the Harold J. Miossi trust has awarded grants to fund San Luis Obispo (SLO) County Agricultural Education Committee’s Great AGventure events for 2019 and 2020.

For the past eight years, the Harold J. Miossi Trust has pledged and granted nearly $130,000 to fund Great AGventure, a hands-on, interactive day of learning about agriculture for the county’s 4th grade students. Students enrolled to participate are escorted through an arena event and five additional 20-minute presentations presented by professional industry volunteers who are involved in various aspects of agriculture. Farm equipment, animals, crops, science and an “AG-tivity” is presented to each class. Great AGventure – south county is held in May at the Arroyo Grande Ag Tech Department and in October, at the Paso Robles Events Center.

“The continued support by the Harold J. Miossi Trust in these grant awards are invaluable to present Great AGventure,” said Kimberly Bradley, executive director of SLO County Agricultural Education Committee. “The general public is so far removed from agriculture anymore that it is imperative to reach out and educate the youth of today about the importance of the agriculture industry and give them the opportunity to see ag in action on a one- on-one basis. Some of these students have no idea where their food comes from. Great AGventure helps enlighten both the students and teachers alike.”

Great AGventure is the largest agricultural education field day program in San Obispo County and free to local schools due to the awarded grants. It attracts nearly 1800 4th grade students throughout the county each year.
