Swearing-In & Victory Party on Dec. 9

–Heidi Harmon will be sworn-in as Mayor of San Luis Obispo at noon on Fri., Dec. 9 at City Hall. Later that evening at 7 p.m. a victory party will be held at the Masonic Hall at 859 Marsh St.

Harmon beat incumbent Mayor Jan Marx by only 47 votes in the recent election. Harmon received 10,500 votes to Marx’s 10,463. The complete vote count from the November 8 election finalized only last Wednesday. Turn out for the election in San Luis was 81%, the greatest percentage in recent years. “This race proves the importance of voting,” Harmon said at a news conference Monday afternoon outside San Luis Obispo City Hall.

Marx served more than a decade as mayor and city councilwoman in San Luis Obispo. In recent years, she angered residents by supporting a large scale hotel development on Monterey Street, despite overwhelming opposition from neighbors on San Luis Drive. She also pushed for a controversial rental housing inspection ordinance, which had its detractors. Harmon says she’ll work to replace that rental housing inspection ordinance.

Harmon told the media and several dozen fans outside San Luis Obispo City Hall on Monday that she’s looking forward to being sworn in as mayor on Dec. 9.
