High school football season begins again after 16 months

High school football season begins again after 16 months of no play

–Friday night, the high school football season finally gets underway in North County. The Templeton Eagles, Paso Robles Bearcats, and Atascadero Greyhounds all have games scheduled tonight. The season was delayed since fall because of the pandemic.

Eagles Coach Don Crow said, “Who would have thought we would be playing over Spring Break? After 16 months, we’re finally going to line up and play some football.”

The games will be played without fans, although the state is allowing a few family members to attend. The rules have changed twice this week. First, the governor’s office said that four family members could attend. Then, they narrowed that to one family member. The rules may change again before the games Friday night.

Although fans may not be able to attend, the games will be televised on nfhsnetwork.com. The Templeton game will also be carried live on KPRL, 1230 AM and 99.3 FM.Coach Crow talks to team

The Templeton Eagles host the Wasco Tigers at 7 p.m. Friday evening. Both teams are coming off a run in the playoffs last season, which was played in fall of 2019. The Eagles have many of their key players back from that playoff run including quarterback Tyler Kaschewksi, running back Josh Berna, and two linemen, Anthony Fischer who is 6’7”, 265, and Chase Richards who is 6’2”, 285. Under restrictions from the state, the players were not able to touch the ball or have physical contact for most of this academic year, but the Tempelton players spent a lot of time lifting weights outdoors.

The Paso Robles Bearcats host the St. Joseph Knights Friday evening at War Memorial Stadium. The Knights are regarded as the best team on the Central Coast.

The Atascadero Greyhounds travel to Santa Maria Friday night to play Pioneer Valley.
