High school lockdown rumor spreads on Snapchat

Message sent by Joseph Williams, Paso Robles Joint Unified School District Director of Student Services:

This afternoon, one of our students made a Snapchat post indicating that there was going to be a lockdown today at Flamson Middle School. This was a factually accurate statement as we had a drill planned, but due to the unfortunate happenings in Santa Clarita, we made the decision to cancel our drill. Unfortunately, other students ran with this information and rumors were spread that threats were made to the school.

Paso PD was notified immediately and conducted a thorough investigation, concluding that a threat was never made. Although we take all possible threats very seriously, and have followed our threat assessment procedures, we always want to use such situations as a learning opportunity for all students. Threatening comments are never taken lightly. As such, we are encouraging our students to take time to think before they say things and or make posts on social media. The consequences for ill-advised or threatening comments are serious and long-lasting.

We are asking you, as our partners in education, to reiterate this message and encourage your students to always report suspected threats and be very mindful of their words. We also want to reassure you that our staff and students frequently participate in safety and security drills and training as a precautionary measure. We take the responsibility of educating and protecting your children with the highest regard.

Please do not hesitate to contact me with any additional questions or concerns.
