Bearcat wrestlers bring home tournament medals
High school sports highlights
–With the Paso Robles High School wrestling team splitting their athletes between two tournaments over the weekend, the Bearcats earned five medals at the Ara Kumjian Wrestling Invitational in San Marino and two medals at the Pete Duca Invitational in Nipomo.
The Bearcats finished as the sixth place team overall at the 20-team Ara Kumjian event held at San Marino High School. Bearcat senior Blake Irysh (heavyweight) and junior John Cabral (220 pounds) were named first place champions. Also earning medals were freshman Nathan Garcia, third place (152); sophomore Case England, fourth place (152), and junior Kris Sanchez, sixth place (145).
At the Pete Duca Invitational held at Nipomo High School, two Bearcat wrestlers claimed fourth place finishes – freshman Max Perez (106 pounds) and junior Juan Camacho (heavyweight).
Bearcat Varsity girls’ basketball
On Friday, the Paso Robles Varsity girls competed in the Ruth Doser Atascadero Holiday Basketball Tournament against Dos Pueblos, with the Chargers beating the Bearcats, 41-28. Kimmy Buchanan was the high scorer with eight points.
The Bearcats won their final game of the tournament on Saturday against Ocean View, earning a 33-31 win over the Seahawks to bring their record to 1-2 overall. Grace Rosa made the game-winning shot with two seconds to go in the fourth quarter. Kimmy Buchanan was the high scorer with 13 points.
Bearcat J.V. girls’ soccer
On Tuesday, the Paso Robles junior varsity girls defeated the Templeton Eagles, 8-0 to bring their record to 3-0 overall. Bella Montelongo led the Bearcats with two goals.
Giselle Zatarain had one goal and three assists; Atiana Stratman, Elise Scheiffele, Kayla Chambers, and Ryan Coffey scored one goal apiece, and Alexandra Fletes had one goal and one assist for the Bearcats.
