Highway 46 East widening continues with bridge work near Cholame

– Construction on the Highway 46 East widening project in the Cholame area is continuing with major work on the Cholame Creek Bridges, which are nearing completion.
The next significant traffic switch is anticipated in spring 2026 when the bridges are expected to open to travelers.
The bridge construction is part of the widening of Highway 46 from west of Davis Road to west of Antelope Road. When complete, the project will connect to the recently completed Highway 46 East/State Route 41 interchange.
All businesses along the Highway 46 East corridor remain open.

Atkinson Construction of Irvine is the contractor for the $148 million project, which is scheduled to be completed in summer 2026.
Caltrans began the first widening segment in the corridor near Paso Robles in 2008. The next phase, the Antelope Grade, is expected to begin construction in spring 2027.
