Highway 46 slated for $55 million construction project

–The California Transportation Commission, or CTC, has approved $55 million for the construction of the next phase of widening Highway 46 East from just east of McMillan Canyon Road to Lucy Brown Road in Shandon.

“The allocation of these funds will allow for this widening on Highway 46 East to continue which will improve safety for everyone,” said Caltrans District 5 Director Tim Gubbins.

The funding for the project was approved in the 2012 State Transportation Improvement Program. The project is expected to begin construction by summer of 2016.

“My compliments to Caltrans District 5 staff for moving this project towards construction in this constrained funding environment,” said San Luis Obispo Council of Governments Executive Director Ron DeCarli. “I am pleased the CTC remains committed to improving safety in this corridor.”

The $38 million widening of Hwy. 46 East from Almond Drive to McMillan Canyon Road now under construction is expected to be completed in December. The widening of Hwy. 46 East from Geneseo Road to east of Almond Drive was completed in 2014. The widening of Hwy. 46 East from Airport Road to Geneseo Road was completed in 2010.
