Highway 46 widening project continues

–The widening of Hwy. 46 East from McMillan Canyon Road to Lucy Brown Road through Shandon will continue next week with a traffic switch on Monday, Oct. 1, according to Cal Trans.

Motorists headed eastbound will be directed onto the newly constructed lanes beginning at 7 p.m. and will include the opening of the new Cholame Creek Bridge. The overnight work to complete this traffic switch will conclude on Tuesday, October 2 at 6 am.

Following this traffic switch, drivers can expect intermittent lane closures on eastbound Hwy. 46 during the daytime hours as the contractor completes grading and drainage work in the area.

Motorists traveling westbound towards Paso Robles on Hwy. 46 will encounter the continuation of a single lane of traffic through the end of October, allowing the contractor to complete drainage work, striping and construction in the center median.

Motorists entering Hwy. 46 East from side streets and driveways should be aware of the new traffic configuration, especially when crossing the eastbound lanes.

The current widening of Hwy 46 East follows three completed phases which began near Paso Robles. The $38 million widening of Hwy. 46 East from Almond Drive to McMillan Canyon Road was completed in 2016. The widening of Hwy. 46 from Geneseo Road to east of Almond Drive was completed in 2014 while the widening of Hwy. 46 from Airport Road to Geneseo Road wrapped up in 2010.

The contractor for this $47 million project is Brosamer & Wall of Walnut Creek CA. It is scheduled to be complete early next year.

Caltrans reminds motorists to move over and slow down when driving through highway construction zones.
