chp

Report submitted by California Highway Patrol

–On Wednesday at approximately 9:10 a.m.., 35-year-old Paso Robles man Bill Keulen Jr., was traveling eastbound on Highway 58 west of W. Pozo Road in a 2004 Dodge Truck following two big rig dump trucks at approx. 40 MPH passing the Santa Margarita Cemetery and approaching a curve in the roadway.

34-year-old Laurie Trejo of Santa Margarita was driving a motorcycle Westbound on Highway 58, West of W. Pozo Road at approximately 55-60 MPH approaching a curve in the roadway.

Keulen Jr. accelerated into the Westbound lane and attempted to pass both big rig dump trucks as they grew close to the curve in the roadway. Keulen Jr. reportedly accelerated to a high speed as he reached the curve at which time Trejo was Westbound in the curve, directly in the path of Keulen Jr.

Keulen Jr. reportedly observed her ahead of him in the curve as he was alongside the lead big rig dump truck and attempted to move back into the Eastbound lane but did not have sufficient clearance and the rear of his truck hit the left side of her motorcycle, sending it out of control onto the north roadway edge dirt shoulder, ejecting Trejo and causing major injuries.

Keulen Jr. reportedly continued traveling on Highway 58 to W. Pozo Road without returning to the scene. Follow-up throughout the day lead authorities to his residence in Paso Robles where he was detained and questioned.
