Yesterday, San Luis Obispo County Sheriff Parkinson announced three arrests have been made in the homicide of 41-year-old Daniel Fuentes, Sr. of Oceano. The suspects are identified as 28-year-old Robert Joseph Garay of San Luis Obispo, 21-year-old Gabriel Luis Garay of San Luis Obispo, and 21-year-old Nathaniel Alexander Jara of Avila Beach.

The investigation began on April 3, 2019 when sheriff’s deputies responded to a report of an assault with a deadly weapon in the 2200 block of Beach Street in Oceano. When deputies arrived, they discovered Daniel Fuentes, Sr., deceased inside a home. It’s believed Fuentes knocked on the door of a neighbor’s house and when they opened the door Fuentes told the residents inside that he had been shot. Fuentes died shortly afterwards.

Over the course of the last four months, detectives were able to identify and arrest the three suspects in this case based on extensive follow-up investigative processes, tips from the public, and forensic evidence.

“This is the result of good, old-fashioned investigative work,” said Sheriff Parkinson. “I am extremely proud of our detectives who worked countless hours on this case which resulted in the arrests of three people.”

Detectives are calling this a gang related incident. All three suspects are identified as members of the Oceano 13 gang. The victim in this case was associated previously with known gang members.

The three suspects were already in San Luis Obispo County Jail on an unrelated case when detectives arrested them on murder charges on Friday.
