House fire leaves family homeless

A family of five were left homeless this morning when their house at 235 San Augustine Road in Paso Robles went up in flames this morning, firefighters report.

On Wednesday, Nov. 6, at 8:22 a.m., two companies of Paso Robles firefighters and one battalion chief responded to a residential structure fire off Creston Road near Sherwood Park.

Firefighters arrived at scene less than four minutes after dispatch and found a single family home with smoke and a large volume of fire coming from the front window, door and roof. Unable to determine if anyone was trapped inside the structure, firefighters immediately stretched fire attack hose lines inside the residence to control the fire. At the same time, firefighters searched the residence for occupants. They discovered that no one was home at the time of the fire. Firefighters contained the fire at 8:38 a.m.

No firefighter or civilian injuries were reported. The American Red Cross is providing housing assistance to the displaced family.

A total of 13 firefighters from the Paso Robles Department of Emergency Services, Cal Fire/San Luis Obispo County Fire and Atascadero Fire Departments responded to the fire. Paso Robles Police Department assisted with traffic control.

Update at 1:48 p.m., Nov. 6, 2013:

Fire investigators from the Paso Robles Department of Emergency Services completed their investigation of the fire and say the fire originated in the living room adjacent to a wood burning stove. Radiant and conducted heat from the wood burning stove caused a pile of dry, split pine to ignite and spread to the living room, the report says. The occupant reported starting a fire in the wood burning at about 7:20 a.m.; the fire was left unattended.

The property value was estimated to be $280,000; total damage to the property is estimated to be approximately $98,000, the report says. The structures estimated content value was $114,000. Estimated content loss was $80,000.

“As winter approaches, Paso Robles Firefighters would like to remind community members that it is not safe to leave an unattended fire burning in your fireplace or wood burning stove,” the report says. “It is also recommended that wood for the fireplace be stored at least eighteen (18”) from the fireplace.”
