Hundreds attend Mid-State Fair Industrial Arts Auction

–The Industrial Arts Auction attracted several hundred people to the Paso Robles Pavilion at the California Mid-State Fair Thursday afternoon.

San Luis Obispo County high school students, who produced exceptional wood and metal projects, saw their creations auctioned off to the highest bidders. The proceeds went to the students to further their education.

The projects included barbecues, coffee tables, picnic tables, gun cabinets, horse feeders and many other creations. Each was welded or constructed by the student. The creativity rivaled the craftsmanship. Each year the auction attracts better and better projects. Some students enter projects for several consecutive years.

Aleah Russell of Paso Robles High School built a wood and glass coffee table.

Most of the projects sold for more than the cost of the materials, but they still put hours into the development and construction. One elaborate barbecue sold for $8,000.

Aleah Russell of Paso Robles High School built a wood and glass coffee table. She plans to study agriculture at the University of Wyoming in Laramie. She told her grandfather, Ron Walters of Atascadero, he could not bid on it.

Carson Brandon of Atascadero High School used discarded materials to create a wood rack with a rustic facade. The rack placed second in the combination category.

Jayden Dyer welded a heavy-duty horse feeder. He put about 75 hours and $1,000 into the project.
