Hundreds attend Veterans Day Ceremony in North County
–Several hundred attended Sunday’s Veterans’ Day Ceremony at the Faces of Freedom Memorial in Atascadero.
The day held a special significance this year because Sunday was the 100th Anniversary of the Armistice to end World War I. To commemorate the event, British troops around the world held a moment of silence at 11 a.m. local time. 22 members of the 22nd Battery, 32nd Regiment of Her Majesty’s Royal Artillery, currently training at Camp Roberts, participated in the ceremony at the Faces of Freedom.

After the colors were presented, the British unit marched in spectacular British style to the front and stood silent for a minute to honor those who made the supreme sacrifice during World War I, a war which changed Great Britain forever.
The 22nd Battery retired to the rear of the spectators and watched the ceremony, which included the Central Coast Pipe and Drum Corps and retired CHP Officer Marlon Varin, who sang America the Beautiful and Danny Boy. San Luis Obispo County District Attorney Dan Dow spoke out the history of Veterans Day, dating back to the original Armistice Day 100 years. He also spoke about contemporary veterans and the challenges they face.
After the hour-long ceremony, the Kiwanis Club hosted a barbecue for those in attendance.
