Hundreds gather for peace officer memorial

–About 500 peace officers and community members gathered at Mission Plaza in San Luis Obispo Thursday for the Peace Officers Memorial. The annual event honors law enforcement officers killed in the line of duty.

Atascadero Police Chief Jerred Healy read the names of eleven California peace officers killed in the past year. Healy said that the state is seeing an increase in the incidence of officers encountering violent criminals intent on killing them.

Representatives of most of the county’s law enforcement agencies attended the Memorial. Also in attendance yesterday were families of fallen officers, including the parents of Keith Boyer, a 27-year veteran with the Whittier Police Force. Boyer was killed in February of this year. He is survived by his parents, his wife and his children.
