Idlers’ ‘Mom & Apple Pie Contest’ returns

Idler’s Home “Mom & Apple Pie Contest” returns for its 31st year this spring. It began in 1984 as Idler’s was coming up on 30 years of business on the Central Coast. The family and company wanted to celebrate its growth while acknowledging the company’s foundational values:families, the home, bringing people together, and enjoying, “the best things in life,” a jingle Idler’s used at the time. The Mom and Apple Pie Contest has been a tradition ever since.

The contest is for Central Coast residents who think they have what it takes to bake the best traditional double-crust apple pie. A panel of local celebrity judges will pick the best pie based on a 100-point scale. Crusts will be examined for appearance, finished edges and flavor. Pie fillings will be judged on consistency, apple doneness and flavor. Bakers can enter one 8-inch pie that’s made at home and taken to Idler’s on competition day.

Two Idler’s Home locations will host preliminary rounds: Saturday, April 11 at Idler’s in San Luis Obispo, and Saturday, April 18 at Idler’s in Paso Robles. The top six finalists from each preliminary round will face off at the SLO Home Show, held Saturday, May 2 at the Alex Madonna Expo Center.

The grand prize is a new KitchenAid stainless steel range. KitchenAid appliances go to other winners: second place earns a standup mixer, third place gets a new microwave, and nine others go home with a hand mixer.

Apple Pie contestants can enter at any Idler’s Home location in Paso Robles, San Luis Obispo, or at the San Luis Obispo Sleep Center. Stores are open seven days a week. You can apply online, at idlershome.com/momandapplepie.

This sounds like something fun to judge.
