Update: Name released for man who died in county jail
Update March 25: An inmate at the San Luis Obispo County Jail was discovered unconscious on Tuesday in a single-person cell, according to the San Luis Obispo County Sheriff’s Office. The Sheriff’s Office has notified the next of kin of the inmate, as a result, they can now identify the man as 33-year-old Sean Michael Alexander of Pismo Beach.
An autopsy is being conducted today. The autopsy report will be pending toxicology results which are expected in six to eight weeks. For further information on in-custody deaths, the sheriff’s office has provided a resource for the public on our website, www.slosheriff.org.
Original story March 24: Correctional deputies reported that they had earlier observed the inmate voluntarily getting into a kneeling position over his bed. His movements and behavior inside the cell were reportedly normal and there was no indication the inmate was in any distress.
While the inmate was housed in the cell, correctional deputies performed regular checks once every 30 minutes to ensure the health and welfare of the inmate. While still in the kneeling position, the inmate appeared to lay his head down on his bed. When correctional deputies checked on him, he was unresponsive. Correctional deputies immediately began life saving measures and the inmate was transported to a local hospital where he was later pronounced deceased, according to the sheriff’s office.
The inmate was brought into the jail on March 18 on a probation violation and for the use of, and being under the influence of, a controlled substance. The inmate was housed in a cell that is under video surveillance at all times. As part of the investigative process, detectives are reviewing that video. No foul play is suspected, according to the sheriff’s office. The investigation is continuing.
they mistreat people in this jail, especially those who have pissed them off enough to be put in a solitary cell. that means they are most likely on "disciplinary", because they did something as wrong as buttoning a button when they are shouting out their roll call name and number.
In solitary they turned up the heat all the way so that I was sweltering, because I badmouthed the tyrannical guard. I badmouthed her because she would look into my cell and make disparaging remarks about my body and my looks. So I told her she reminded me of a cabbage patch doll with a string out the back of her neck so that whenever anyone pulled the string the doll would say "Wow" "Wow" in a sarcastic way like she did.So she punished me by turning the heat all the way up in my cell. I had to take off all of my clothes because they were dripping wet from my sweat, and I had to put my mouth and nose down on the floor where the door met the floor so I could get some cool air to breathe, then to have the guard, after I beg and cry for mercy, to turn up the air conditioning in my solitary cell so cold that the moisture on my clothes from my sweat that I now tried to put back on to keep me warm, felt like it had turned to ice. I don't know how I ever made it through that ordeal.
That fact that guards are allowed free reign over inmates, to pick and choose who they will pick on and torture is appalling, but it is only too true. Because, who is going to listen to you, a criminal? Who is going to believe you didn't deserve to be treated like that? Only other criminals will listen and believe.
These guards are allowed to bully inmates, do so without supervision with the inmates unprotected. Who is going to protect them? Other guards? Not on their watch. then they deny any mistreatment and have generic catch all terms for justifying abuse in the paperwork, not that any of the heat and cold techniques are written into the report logs. neither does the torture of having a busted mono speaker piped into your cell on an r&b station with scratchy reception that repeats the same song lineup every 90 minutes, all day long.
These guards work their terroristic reigns unsupervised, and how these guards are allowed to use inmates as voodoo dolls or whipping boys is a mystery to me. or maybe it is because the county has so such a small population that there are not enough of the abused group to have the strength in numbers.
Maybe those at the top of the criminal justice food chain locally believe that whatever they are doing works well, because, "look how low the crime rate remains in this county!". Maybe they figure if they let low life's get away with being low life's in their neighborhoods and communities those low life's will call all of their low life friends and families from the valley or LA or SF to move here, bringing their crime rates with them, and their lower standards of living. so abuse the hell out of them, thereby warn all of their family members from afar to stay afar, because, just warning you, you move here with any plans or designs of manipulating the environment to suit your criminal tastes, you may just well end up dying here.
