Nonprofit selected as Community Service Award recipient and Greek Week philanthropy beneficiary

–Local nonprofit Jack’s Helping Hand has recently been recognized in two major capacities by the Cal Poly campus. The nonprofit was selected both as a recipient of the Cal Poly President’s Community Service Award and as the beneficiary of Cal Poly’s Greek Week 2016, in which students raised more than $4,200 for the nonprofit.

On May 12, the nonprofit was presented with Cal Poly President’s Community Service Award for Outstanding Campus/Community Collaboration. This is one of four awards given to highlight achievements in service to the community, selected from written nominations by a panel of faculty, staff and students. The Outstanding Campus/Community Collaboration award is given to an organization that has established a strong relationship with the university, allowing students to be involved in its work and thus impact their communities through volunteer service.

“The partnership we have with Cal Poly is special. We get to build a connection between the students, faculty and staff and the children we help,” Executive Director of Jack’s Helping Hand Karen Borges said. “Greek Week is such a fun experience and this award is an honor to receive; these recognitions show both Jack’s Helping Hand’s and Cal Poly’s commitment to helping children in our community.”

Also in the spirit of campus collaboration, the nonprofit was selected as the philanthropy recipient for Cal Poly’s Greek Week 2016. From May 3 to May 9, fraternities and sororities came together to put on a variety of events to raise money for Jack’s Helping Hand. Events included a lip sync competition, blood drive, soccer and flag football matches, beach competitions, and Service Sunday in which teams were sent out to service projects all over San Luis Obispo. In total, Greek Week raised $4,250 for JHH.

Founded in 2006, Jack’s Helping Hand, Inc. is a local nonprofit organization dedicated to helping families of children with cancer and special needs. It has established and provided community programs that enable and empower families, professionals and the broader community to meet the unique and unmet physical, mental and medical needs of special children and young adults under the age of 21.
