Joanne Olene Sixel dies at 79

–Joanne Sixel passed away last week of surrounded by members of her family. She died of complications of Parkinson’s Disease which she had valiantly battled for many years.

Joanne Olene Peterson was born Joanne Olene Gabrielson on August 5, 1937 in St. Edward, Nebraska in the home of her maternal grandparents, Otto and Selma Nelson. This is where her mother, Ann, and sister, Joyce, had been living following the death of her father, Ole Johansson Gabrielson in December 1936.

They moved to Turlock CA where her mother married Fred (Ted) Peterson in 1940. She graduated from Turlock High School in 1955 and briefly attended nursing school.

She met and married Jerome (Jerry) Sixel in 1958. They resided in several places over the years: Milwaukee WI; Minneapolis MN; Tucson, AZ; Whittier, CA; La Habra, CA; Kent, WA and eventually retired in Paso Robles CA. They moved to Pleasanton, CA in May of 2016 to be near their daughter Sheri. They had been married 59 years when Jerry passed away in January of this year.

Joanne was a homemaker and eventually went to work in 1978 at a large medical group where she worked for 18 years. Joanne loved to garden, entertain, shop, volunteer at the church, and spend time with friends and family. She loved her family fiercely and enjoyed spending time with her children and watch anything her grandchildren did. She and Jerry enjoyed riding motorcycles and many cruises around the world. Joanne never went anywhere without looking just right and her red lipstick! She was a loving friend to so many and will be greatly missed by all.

Joanne is survived by her children Mark Sixel (Kate) of Torrance, CA, Sheri Newman (John) of Pleasanton, CA, and Susan Bandy (Kent) of Fallbrook, CA. Her grandchildren: Sonia Sixel, Andrew Matar, Sarah Marvive (Michael), Parker Newman, Garret Newman, Kyle Newman, Jaclyn Bandy, Jake Bandy and her sister, Joyce Conant of Tucson AZ. Joanne is predeceased by her husband Jerome Sixel and daughters, Sally and Sandra Sixel.

A memorial service will be held at Trinity Lutheran Church, 940 Creston Road, Paso Robles, CA on Friday March 31, 2017 at 4 p.m. in the afternoon with a reception immediately following at the church.
