Jody Mulgrew and his band will headline at Sculpterra Winery on Saturday, Sept. 19. Special guest Kristen Black will open the show at 6 p.m.

Morro Bay native Jody Mulgrew once fronted the old-time/Americana band called The Johnny Starlings, and now leads a group called the Skeleton Crew. His debut solo CD, Rocket Ship, gets regular airplay on The Krush 92.5, and won “Best Album” at the New Times Music Awards. This year, he also performed at the Live Oak Music Festival.

Kristen Black has a dual life – Cal Poly chemistry professor and folk-rock bandleader. After dropping out of the music circuit for a while, she’s headlined several Songwriters at Play showcases in the past few years. Raised in Los Angeles, Kristen earned a degree in biochemistry from Cal Poly. She got her Ph.D. in Organic Chemistry and pursued a career in teaching chemistry at Cal Poly. In 2001, Black took some time off teaching to put a band together and record some of her songs. After several years of playing the local SLO club scene, Black went acoustic with fellow songwriter, Carol Lowell. They collaborated on a CD, “Postcards from Avalon,” and performed at local wineries and festivals. But again, teaching called her back where she accepted a tenure-track position at Cal Poly and fell of the music radar for a few years. With a deep longing to get back into the music scene, Black says she jumped back in and is now playing acoustic music with a new twist.

The show is part of the Songwriters at Play concert series. Tickets are available now at Sculpterra: $15 per person, $10 wine club members ($20 / $15 at the door). Wine will be sold by the bottle or glass; food will be available for purchase. For advance tickets, visit or call Sculpterra Winery, 5015 Linne Road, Paso Robles, (805) 226-8881.
