After a single-car crash in rural Paso Robles on May 19 just before 8 a.m., Karley Maldonado, 18, of Paso Robles was airlifted to the Ronald Regan UCLA Medical Center after first going to Sierra Vista Regional Medical Center.

According to the CHP, Maldonado was driving at about 55 mph in a 2002 Volkswagen Cabrio westbound on Union Road when the accident occurred. The vehicle began to drift off the road, and then re-entered the roadway with a steering motion to the left. Once her car returned to the roadway, she made a sharp turn to the right, causing the vehicle to rotate, leave the roadway and travel onto the dirt shoulder, and strike a juniper tree head-on, CHP reports. The CHP reported that drugs and alcohol were not believed to be factors.

She had her first surgery that night. She sustained major injuries as a result of the collision, including a bilateral femur fracture, broken ankles and other injuries to her chest, according to the California Highway Patrol. According to family friend Remy Wicks, Maldonado has major trauma to the lower extremities and is being evaluated for a head injury.

“Karley will be accruing major medical expenses over the next weeks, months possibly years,” Wicks wrote on the GoFundMe campaign she started for Maldonado a week ago. “Anything you can do to help Karley and her amazing family would be more than appreciated.”

Currently, the campaign had raised a little more than $8,000 of the $15,000 goal.
