70 new kittens under the care of North County Humane Society team

–It’s “kitten season,” at North County Humane Society. Between adopted kittens waiting to be picked up and fosters, there are about 70 kittens at North County Humane, with more coming in every day, according to shelter representative Tom Lott.

“We currently have about 20 kittens at NCHS and fortunately, almost all of them have been adopted and are just waiting to go home,” said Lott. One volunteer has taken 22 bottle baby kittens to her house to care for, and other foster homes have about 25, he says.Kittens at North County Humane Society

In 2015, they were able to find the “purr-fect” homes for 287 adorable kittens, and they say hope to do even more this season. Before a kitten can brighten up a new adopters’ home, they are spayed or neutered, microchipped, treated for fleas, ear mites, and worms, tested for FELV, FIV and heartworm. Kittens also receive their first vaccine at 8 weeks and return one month later for their second.

Last week, the shelter held a, “kitten cuddle” and baby shower, an annual event to celebrate their kittens and to raise some money for their care. They provide refreshments (and of course the kittens) and ask visitors to bring supplies – paper towels,  kitten food or milk replacement – or to make a donation toward these supplies.  For each donation they gave a raffle ticket toward a big basket of goodies. The kitten cuddle raised $800 in cash and supplies.

The adoption fee for any kitten under 6 months is $100, which also includes a free cardboard kitty carrier.
