Lady Bearcats tame the Panthers 

High school sports highlights

Girls’ basketball
The Bearcats earned a 37-24 win over the visiting Pioneer Valley Panthers on Wednesday.

Grace Rosa was the high scorer for Paso Robles with 25 points. Gwen Lundy suited up and played after sitting out for several games due to a knee injury. Two key players, Bailey Lewis and Kimmy Buchanan, are currently recovering from injuries, according to Coach Heidi Wittstrom-Sill.

Paso Robles High School, PRHS Bearcats“We are hoping to have them back in full force soon,” said Wittstrom-Sill. “The team did a nice job of rebounding offensively, boxing out on defense and taking care of the ball. We were very proud of our effort.”

The Bearcats are on the road to take on the Righetti Warriors on Friday at 5:30 p.m. with JV taking the court at 4 p.m.

Girls’ water polo

After a tough battle, the Bearcat girls lost to the Righetti Warriors, 9-5 on Tuesday at home.

Senior Makenna Pugh and junior Veronica Ayala scored two goals apiece for Paso Robles, and freshman Aubrey Pasky scored one goal. Goalkeeper Kelsey Lewis, a senior, had 12 saves.

The Bearcats (2-2 league, 11-7 overall) are set to take part in the Oxnard Pacific View Tournament on Saturday.

Girls’ soccer
Despite a hard-fought match, the varsity Lady Bearcats lost to the Panthers, 1-0 at Pioneer Valley High in Santa Maria on Wednesday.

Natalya Marcove had 15 saves on goal for Paso Robles. Kailee Vinnedge, Sydnie Esser, and Hunter Young had three shots each on goal, and take-aways were led by Madison Mitchell at seven.

The varsity Bearcats (0-6 league, 3-1-9 overall) will be looking for their first PAC-8 win on Friday as they host the Righetti Warriors at 6:30 p.m. at War Memorial Stadium.

On Monday, the junior varsity Bearcat girls faced San Luis Obispo, earning a 4-1 victory over the Tigers.

Paso Robles took an early lead when Bella Montelongo scored with a far post shot assisted by Giselle Zatarain in the second minute of the match. Montelongo paired up with Zatarain again for her second goal at the twelve-minute mark.

The Tigers answered back with a goal of their own before Ryann Coffey scored in minute 25. The Bearcats never looked back, with Zatarain scoring the final goal for Paso Robles in minute 51 and earning Player of the Game recognition.

“It was a great team effort and team win,” said Coach Dillon Simoulis.

The JV Bearcats will travel to Santa Maria on Friday to face the Righetti Warriors at 6:30 p.m.

Boys’ soccer

The Bearcats lost by 3-2 to the Panthers on Wednesday at Pioneer Valley High School.

Ivan Flores scored the first goal for Paso Robles on a penalty kick in the second half. The second goal for the Bearcats was scored by Luis Campoverde on an assist from Jesus Mendoza.

The varsity Bearcats will host the Righetti Warriors at 4:30 p.m. on Friday at War Memorial Stadium.

Wrestling

The Bearcats traveled to Santa Maria on Tuesday to face Pioneer Valley, but were unable to bring home a win as they lost to the Panthers, 55-6.

In the 160 weight class, Kade England won by a 9-8 decision, while John Cabral (195) won by a 3-1 decision for Paso Robles.

Two of the featured matches of the night had wrestlers that are currently ranked in the top 20 of the Southern Section facing off. Bearcat Nathan Garcia (145) lost to Z. Garcia of Pioneer Valley in a 3-0 decision. Blake Irysh (285) of Paso Robles lost to Ricardo Alonzo by a 3-2 decision in the fourth overtime period.

The Bearcats will travel to Gilroy on Friday and Saturday to compete in the Gilroy MidCal Wrestling Tournament, taking place at Gilroy High School; times vary.
