High School clarifies details around return of modified youth sports

paso robles schools re-opening

–Earlier this week, Paso Robles High School Assistant Principal Thomas Harrington sent out the following letter, clarifying specifics around the modified return of high school athletics. The letter reads as follows:

As we work to start many of the sports at Paso Robles High School, I am sure you have several questions after I sent the update on Friday. I would like to clarify several items of interest to student-athletes and parents.

Transportation: Parents are responsible for the transportation of their student-athlete to and from all practices and competitions. If the team leaves during school hours and is not being transported by a parent, the student-athlete will need to obtain an off-campus permit from the attendance office. Anyone picking up a student-athlete from an away competition must be listed in FamilyID.

Spectators: Up to four immediate household members per student-athlete may attend athletic competitions. This includes both schools and will be limited by facility capacity. At away games, they may not allow entry to those under 18 years old. Facilities that have smaller capacities, ie. Municipal Pool (water polo and swim/dive), Barnhart Field (baseball), and the PRHS Softball Complex will allow two immediate adult household members per athlete. When visiting other schools, please ask your coaches about specific spectator restrictions prior to traveling. Not all sites are able to accommodate spectators at this time. All spectators are required to pay for entry. Mandatory wearing of masks and social distancing are of primary importance and are not negotiable. Officials, coaches, or game management staff may stop any contest where spectators are not following directives.

Multi-sport athletes: Student-athletes are no longer restricted to a single team or school cohort. There is also no quarantine period when moving to another sport or cohort. Student-athletes participating in two sports simultaneously must meet with the Athletic Director, coaches from both teams, and parents to determine expectations of each program.

Informed consent: Per state guidance, parents of student-athletes participating in football, water polo, and soccer will need to sign an updated COVID-19 informed consent and waiver form. This form will also allow us to perform COVID testing of participants in water polo and football if required by our county’s metrics. The athletic department will distribute the form via FamilyID and coaches. Forms are also available in the athletic office.

I hope this provides clarity. Again, we appreciate your patience. contact me with any questions.

Assistant Principal
