Letter: Colony Sandwich Shop is better than ever

    To the editor,

    – Last Sunday, my wife Nicole and I decided to visit an old friend, Colony Sandwich Shop, for breakfast. Conveniently located in downtown Atascadero. Founded by Shayne and Joanna Wemple, who painstakingly repurposed an ugly eyesore gas station in 2019 and created one of the most beloved restaurants in town. They were early on with the revival of downtown Atascadero. We had not been to Colony since it was sold.

Colony was purchased a year ago, and the new owners improved what was already a fun place to grab a sandwich, quaff a cold beer, and see live music. I was worried the new owners would ruin a good thing.

The menu retains most of the classic sandwiches and salads that made Colony special. They have also added some new additions that are fantastic. My wife had the Bacon Veggie breakfast sandwich on a fresh gluten free bun. It had a generous amount of crispy bacon, but the surprise was the creamy cilantro lime crema combined with the cashew nacho sauce. I was hoping for a bite but when I asked for one it was all gone. Paired with fresh seasoned tater tots, her breakfast was the perfect comfort food.

Seeking my own comfort food, I ordered the Machaca Breakfast Burrito. It came loaded with seasoned pork, eggs, beans, and tangy Verde salsa. It was so big I could only eat half of it and enjoyed it the next morning. We both concluded Colony is still one of the best places in Atascadero to dine outside on a sunny day.

In addition to the fun bar style menu, the new owners improved the seating with lovely new umbrellas. They also increased the size of the kids’ play area, so Colony is the perfect place for family fun. They also host live music every Wednesday evening, so if you want to enjoy a cold beer, a local glass of wine, a tasty sandwich and listen to quality live music. Colony Sandwich Shop is the place to be!
