Letter: community representation requires openness about ideological views

    letter to the editor

    To the editor,

    – In a recent opinion piece reflecting on a first year on the Paso Robles City Council, a sitting council member emphasized the importance of civic participation and described the role of a council member as serving as a bridge between the community and City Hall. Encouraging residents to engage with local government is an important goal, and it is one I strongly support. At the same time, that conversation invites a broader discussion about authenticity and ideological transparency in public service.

As a former elected Paso Robles school board trustee and a PRJUSD teacher of nearly 30 years serving local families, I agree that civic participation is essential to a healthy community. Transparency, engagement, and listening to residents are foundational principles of good governance. On that point, we are united.

However, authenticity in public life matters just as much as outreach events and well-crafted reflections. It can sometimes be difficult to reconcile the image of a broadly representative “bridge” for the entire community with a public record that includes strong activism on divisive national issues — including instances where local leaders have publicly encouraged residents to mobilize in response to federal immigration enforcement activity.

There is nothing inherently wrong with elected officials holding strong ideological convictions. But voters deserve clarity. A record of outspoken advocacy on contentious national issues does not simply disappear because the language of governance becomes more polished. If we are to build trust, we must be honest about the values and perspectives that shape our decisions.

Paso Robles thrives when leadership reflects the full spectrum of our community — including residents who support law enforcement, value legal immigration, and hold a wide range of perspectives on public policy. Genuine representation requires more than accessibility; it requires balance and an acknowledgment of where one truly stands.

    -Dorian Baker, San Miguel

There is a current sitting council member who just cost the city hundreds thousands over a lawsuite because he refused to follow the law because of community agitators; and you feel the need to discuss this? We have a current administration with ties to child sex trafficking and a convicted felon associated with election fraud and rape President; and you discuss this? Dorian; this is a dishonest approach to any dialogue and is disappointing. No one has ever questioned local or federal law enforcement in any regard, and to disparage civic engagement is worrying and divisive.

BG here you are again sitting behind your screen and key board like the coward you are defending the disgraceful Kris Beal and her behavior while sitting as a Sworn member of our City Council as she attempted to protect Criminal Aliens and putting our federal law enforcement and the public at risk. Why don’t you let us know your name B G so the public can know who you are! It’s always good to know who the enemy within is. But like all cowards you most likely won’t!!!

Again, Michael. With your age; id expect more adult dialogue. And id be worried for you at your age being so angry; to suffer from an infarction or stroke. May God Bless your soul and bring you peace.

Michael, the only one affiliated with a criminal is you; ie, Chris B; who helped you fail in your attempt to run for council. Get over it, Lower your blood pressure. Reflect on your verbal abuse. Avoid an infarction and Stroke. If someone touching your shoulder sent you to therapy and caused trauma; god knows what posting online is doing to your health.

BG is a liar. Plain and simple. He does not name the councilman or the agitators. Does not have any ptoof and just throws out BS.

What is it with the hesitancy of naming name?. Everyone knows exactly who and whom is being referenced to in this article and responses – Chris Bausch and Ty Lewis. If the end result is ever to bring everyone in this city together (probably impossible), then nothing should be off limits. And I will also add that also applies to our country. Yes, we currently have a convicted felon as president, who made many, many promises about what he was going to do – and has failed on the vast majority of those promises. That is the truth and only the truth will set you free.

Thank you. There isnt harm in naming names. There is harm in anger and name calling.

Its published in the tribune, this publication. I am not the one calling names. If you aren’t aware of current civics, you shouldn’t be on a computer.

I’m not a Paso Robles resident, but I was roped into the controversy by a few community agitators simply because I had an opinion about it.

Councilmember Kris Beal raised awareness about what was happening, but she did not advocate anyone to obstruct federal investigations or activity. Fact. She encouraged people to exercise their First Amendment rights to raise awareness of what was happening; it was never about “protecting Criminal Aliens.” She could’ve easily said a lot more, but she didn’t because — as an elected official — she runs the risk of alienating her constituents over a political issue she has no jurisdiction over. Yet some have manufactured an issue over it, and that’s disingenuous, quite frankly.

Councilmember Chris Bausch cost the City of Paso Robles and taxpayers thousands because he didn’t lawfully comply with the California Public Records Act. It’s true that Bausch ultimately turned over records, but he didn’t turn over all the records. And the same people who feign moral outrage over Beal’s Facebook comment don’t take into account that her comments didn’t cost the City anything.

    Get over it.
