Letter: Diamond David Lee Roth rocks the Mid-State Fair

    To the editor,

A summer night of classic rock

    – Legendary Van Halen frontman David Lee Roth brought a high-voltage night of rock and roll to the Paso Robles Mid-State Fair, delivering a performance that transported fans back to the golden summer of 1984. Though Roth’s signature high-flying stage antics have mellowed with time, his infectious energy, humor, and undeniable stage presence reminded the crowd why he remains one of rock’s most iconic frontmen.

For longtime fans, the concert was a homecoming. “My last Van Halen concert was in 1983 at the US Festival,” said Peter Lucier, Owner of Hearing Aid Specialists of the Central Coast. “Back then, I was a mile away from the stage. But tonight, in Paso Robles, everyone had a chance to get close enough to feel the band’s energy firsthand.”

The evening’s setlist was packed with timeless hits, including “Panama,” “I’ll Wait,” “You Really Got Me,” and “Unchained”—songs that have been staples on local rock station KZOZ for the past four decades. Known for headlining stadiums and arenas, Roth’s appearance on the more intimate Chumash Grandstand Arena stage was a rare and electrifying experience for fans.

The concert also carried a heartfelt tribute, as earlier that day, the rock world was shaken by the news of Ozzy Osbourne’s passing. Roth took a moment to share a personal story of Van Halen’s early days opening for Black Sabbath, leading the crowd in a toast and prayer in Ozzy’s honor. “Long live rock and roll!” he declared, to roaring applause.

The Mid-State Fair continues its tradition of bringing legendary rock acts to San Luis Obispo County, having hosted iconic performers such as KISS, Alice Cooper, Tom Petty, and Boston in years past. Events like these offer fans a cherished opportunity to relive the soundtrack of their youth right in their own backyard.

Review by Peter Lucier, Owner of Hearing Aid Specialists of the Central Coast. Peter and his wife Nicole enjoy reviewing family-owned restaurants, wineries, and exploring their beautiful slice of heaven known as SLO County.
