Letter: Homelessness represents our failure as a community to respect others

Letter to the editor paso robles daily newsTo the editor,

I was crushed to read the recent callous attacks on the people in our community that have the least. Jason Holland asked that others in the area that care about those that are less fortunate write in and make sure that voices calling for the persecution of others were not the only ones represented. Homelessness represents our failure as a community to respect the rules we were all taught as children. If we see someone who has less than us, we are supposed to share.

If seeing people who cannot afford a vacation ruins your vacation, please don’t come again, the good people of Paso Robles deserve better than you.

No one is illegal, that’s not how humanity works. Instead of drawing lines around groups of people, what if we just tried to help as much as we can?

If you were robbed, I am sorry. I imagine that would make you feel less secure. But imagine how insecure you would feel without a roof to sleep under.

We can solve homelessness – we have the technology. (The technology is houses.) Housing First is a proven solution. So let’s ask our representatives to add Housing First to their agendas.

If this sounds like merely throwing money at the problem, then that is a great excuse to keep your money in your pocket. But you can’t have your cake and eat it too. Either have compassion and care for your community or get used to watching it suffer.
