Letter: Let’s make San Miguel safer

To the editor,

As I have spent the last few days walking the streets of San Miguel talking to voters and understanding their concerns, I noticed a lot of ADT security signs and other signs including “’Keep Out,’ ‘no trespassing,’ ‘this property monitored by video surveillance,’ and ‘owner is armed.’” This to me is highly upsetting to see residents of our community feel that they have to resort to security systems to keep their homes safe. I also was made aware that there have been over 400 calls to the sheriff’s department since July, including reports of vandalism and burglaries.

When I moved to San Miguel 17 years ago, this was not the case. Our community felt safe. Somehow since then we have lost that ability to feel safe. I support our sheriff’s department and their efforts to keep our community safe. I support trying to find giving our sheriff’s the resources they need to do their jobs effectively.

It is why after digging deeper I am upset that the San Miguel CSD Board back in June killed a proposal that included helping create a place for sheriffs in San Miguel. Members of the board did not voice their support on the proposal. I have spoken with Mr. Hernandez on this and he agrees with me that San Miguel is long overdue for a sheriff’s place to support the communities needs. We both call on the San Miguel CSD to actively support that especially since it is directly stated on their website “Committed to serving the community with effectiveness, efficiency, and care to support the economic and social quality of life in San Miguel.” We both also strongly urge those board members to reverse their opposition to creating a place for the sheriff’s and actively become a champion for public safety.

Hector Palafox
Candidate for San Miguel CSD
