Letter: Library not addressing risky steps?

To the editor,

I didn’t regard using the three steps in front of the information desk that connect the two floors of the Paso Robles Library as risky but as I stepped on the bottom step to reach the upper floor I slipped, fell backwards, hit the floor hard, and was unable to move. Two women hoisted me to my feet. My tailbone was injured. Who would think?

Carpet on steps becomes loose with age and use so that when stepped on it moves causing slippage. In my opinion that caused my fall.

I submitted a “letter of incident” to the Administrative Assistant of the library and to the City Librarian where I brought the safety of the steps into question. I expected a reply that information and instructions readily available on the internet would be used to make the steps safe. Did that happen? No. City Representatives handling this matter have sidetracked or refused to discuss step safety with me. The steps are safe they insist despite my fall.

Wouldn’t it seem reasonable to follow guidelines on step safety rather than to risk another person being injured? I think so. What will it take to eliminate the risk?
